Emergency preparedness
The Humane Society of Skagit Valley is Skagit County's designated small animal relief center.
We are responsible for housing displaced small companion animals in the event of a disaster. We accept donations of tarps, emergency pet food supplies, first aid supplies, and other necessities. We also encourage families to prepare for a natural disaster or other emergency. In addition to planning for your human family's safety, have the following items on hand for each pet:- Dry and/or wet food, of the brand and type that your pet usually eats, to last two weeks, along with dishes and a can opener if needed.
- Potable water in plastic gallon jugs, to last two weeks, along with a dish or bowl.
- Cat litter, to last two weeks, plus litter box and cleaning supplies.
- Paperwork, including vaccine and veterinary records, microchip information, veterinarian contact information, and a printed photograph of your pet in case of loss.
- List of emergency contacts, both in and out of the area.
- Medication to last two weeks, in original prescription bottles with labels, including dosage instructions.
- Collar, leash, and harness, in addition to a collar that is always on your pet with ID attached.
- A pet bed or blanket.
- A secure crate of the appropriate size for each pet.
- Proof of ownership such as adoption or registration papers.
- First aid supplies.
We recommend rotating stored food, water, and medical/veterinary supplies to ensure freshness.
In the event of an emergency evacuation, pet owners need to allow additional time to arrange care for pets. Many emergency shelters cannot accomodate families with pets, and delays resulting from pet care conflicts can endanger human and animal lives. If you would like help establishing an emergency plan for your two- and four-legged family, please call the Humane Society of Skagit Valley or read more at Washington State's Emergency Management Division website. It is an excellent resource with additional tips for owners of horses, reptiles, and other animals.
A toast to Mattie's adopter and Dinky's health!
Congratulations to Mattie's new owner! Our beautiful corgi went to a great new home, and we're grateful to the adopter for putting the adoption fee towards kennelmate Dinky's medical costs. Dinky, a 9 year old maltese, was able to have lifesaving surgery thanks to this generlosity as well as that of donors Donna and Elliott (of Mukilteo) and Alison Percival (of Bellingham). Dinky was adopted just after his surgery, but sadly that placement did not work out as he did not get along with the other dog in the home. HSSV is looking for the perfect only-dog home for this kid-friendly, healthy, active maltese. Our Second Chance Fund for animals still needs to be built back up. We raised just enough to save Dinky's life - can you chip in so that we can save the next pet in need, too?

ASPCA grants support learning, shelter operation
The Humane Society of Skagit Valley was the grateful recipient of two ASPCA grants this year. The Julie Morris Scholarship, granted in February 2013, allowed our executive director Janine Ceja to attend the May 2013 Animal Care Expo in Nashville, Tennessee. She came back from her first Expo inspired, educated, and ready to work even harder for the animals of Skagit County!
The second grant, in the amount of $500, was given by the ASPCA in memory of Sandy Nelson and will be used for general operating support.

How will you help?
If you've ever thought, "I can't help the animals, I don't have the money," then give your energy. Sew for them, walk them, or help coordinate volunteers at the shelter. If you've thought, "I can't help the animals, I don't have the skills," then give them your heart. Hold them, cuddle them, show them you care. If you've thought, "I can't help the animals, I don't have the time," then skip the cappuccino and give them your pocket change. Become a Humane Society member. Share their stories on Facebook. Tell a friend about the shelter. Vow to adopt, rather than breed or buy, next time you welcome a pet of your own.Everyone has a little something extra, whether it's time, energy, money, passion, love, or a skill. When you do your part to chip in, those little somethings really add up!

Muddy Paws Club
We have beautiful trails, beautiful dogs, and a lot of tail-wagging excitement to share with you! Some of our most athletic shelter dogs have been here too long because they don't get enough opportunities to work out their wiggles on walks with staff or volunteers. Dinky needs surgery. Can you help?
Mattie, a young purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgi, is dashing to the rescue! She was surrendered by her owners through no fault of her own and is healthy, mannerly, and ready to warm someone's home with her bright-eyed smile. She is ready to find a home AND help a friend! Her adoption fee will go towards funding Dinky's operation. She's worth it—he's worth it—and they both deserve long, happy lives in warm, friendly homes.Come on down to the shelter if you want to put a few bucks in Dinky's surgery fund, meet Mattie, or submit an application to adopt.
Butters: a touching reunion!
We just wanted to share with you a touching story of a Butters, whose owner Yuki had to leave this country to help her family in Japan after the earthquake a couple of years ago. Since she could not take Butters with her, Yuki had to surrender her precious dog to another family. Butters ended up at the shelter two years later when those people could no longer keep him.
Butters was then adopted to Patricia Smalley, who loved the dog immediately.Eventually, Yuki came back to the US just to get Butters and take him back to Japan with her! When she found out what had happened and talked to us at the shelter, her story moved everyone. We called Patricia to see how things were going. Patricia's kind heart compelled her to bring Butters back and see if he had missed Yuki. To everyone's surprise, this little dog was so excited to be reunited with his original owner! Everyone cried that day. Yuki was able to get her loving companion back because of Patricia’s kindness and her own determination.
We want to remind you to never lose hope if you have a missing animal. Call and visit your local animal shelter often. Those of us at the Humane Society of Skagit Valley work very hard to reunite pets with their owners.

A big thank you to our volunteers who helped Truly, Sid, Shemmy, Bentley, Dakota, Casanova, and Hurley shine at the Anacortes Bark in the Park today!
All the dogs showed off, competed in fun contest, participated in the All Dogs and Adoptable Dogs parades, and made some new friends! Truly was the real star of the show—she found a home! Congratulations to lucky Truly and her new owner.
Hurley and Casanova, two of nine Australian Cattle Dog puppies, wore themselves out sharing big doses of kisses, cuddles, and incredible cuteness!

Introducing the Soda Sisters: loving feline family needs foster care!
This beautiful family came in squeezed together in one crate! The family consists of two gorgeous longhaired sisters, Sprite the gray and orange dilute tortie girl and Gingerale the black and gold tortie, plus two litters of kittens. Sprite and Gingerale share nursing duty for ALL the kittens, and we know that the orange kittens are a bit older than the black ones but beyond that we can't tell which kittens are whose! For that reason, we really want to keep these bonded mamas together in foster care while they raise their babies. The whole family is sweet, healthy, and friendly. Can you give these lovely ladies a safe place to raise their kittens together?
Baby Surprise! Contest announced.
Kali Kitty surprised us all last week by giving birth, out of the blue, to one beautiful, healthy, fat kitten! Kali must have gotten pregnant right before she came to the shelter, and her petite frame hid it all the way up until the very last moment. Mama and baby are doing well, but baby needs a name. Who will choose it? Maybe YOU!

HSSV and Skagit River Subaru partner to “Share the Love” and find forever homes for the Skagit Valley's homeless pets

An estimated 70 percent of Subaru owners have pets; more than any other auto manufacturer!
In Fall 2012, the Humane Society of Skagit Valley (HSSV) joined the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) and Subaru of America for Subaru’s annual year-end “Share the Love” campaign and celebration. As part of this national effort, HSSV and Skagit River Subaru teamed up to create off-site adoptions at the Burlington dealership.
Share the Love” gives new car buyers and leasees the opportunity to donate $250 to one of five charities – including the ASPCA. One hundred percent of the ASPCA’s “Share the Love” donation is targeted for distribution as grants to animal welfare organizations in all 50 states and the Humane Society of Skagit Valley is pleased to be a recipient of one of these grants.

Our shelter has hundreds of volunteers, but this special mother/daughter team is truly outstanding. We would like to introduce to you Kari (mom) and Annette Rigsbee. They have been helping out for two years! These ladies come through every time, ready with their smocks to help us get the cat areas all cleaned up. This dedicated crew comes in four to five mornings a week. Kari comes straight from a graveyard work shift to nurture her daughter’s passion for these animals, giving three or four more hours of her valuable time each day to the homeless kitties of the valley. We at the shelter want to say THANK YOU Annette and Kari for all you do!
Special program announced
We are introducing “Maggie’s Legacy,” a donation-based program to help assist pet owners of Skagit Valley in need of financial assistance in paying for a portion of trauma-related veterinary issues. The goal of this program is to help pet owners keep their pet when money is an obstacle to obtaining veterinary treatment. This program pays a portion of veterinary costs to help pet owners save their pets when faced with a sudden vet bill.
Founder and donor Ellie Wright was moved by the need for emergency assistance within our community. Until recently, HSSV did not have a specific program to help pet owners with veterinary costs for pets in distress. Thanks to Ellie Wright and in memory of her beloved basset hound Maggie, this became a reality. Please help us keep the program alive with your financial support! The more donors this valuable program has, the better we will be able to help when loving owners are faced with surrendering or euthanizing their pets because of expensive veterinary emergencies.
Bark in the Park
On Saturday, June 15 from 10 to 3, join us in Anacortes for the Bark in the Park! This 9th annual event, planned for Storvik Park (on 32nd Street) features dog contests, demos, games, goodie bags, and more! We'll be there with some of our nicest adoptable dogs. Your leashed dogs are welcome! Some events and contests have a $5 per dog entry fee.For additional information, call the shelter.

Our June board meeting has been postponed due to the I5 Skagit Bridge collapse and other factors. We apologize for any inconvenience! Our next quarterly meeting is scheduled for Saturday, July 11 at 6:00 pm at the Humane Society of Skagit Valley.
Eileen Lamberton, Volunteer Extraordinaire!
This young lady’s middle names are “Committed” and “Passionate”! Meet Eileen Lamberton, a volunteer at the Humane Society of Skagit Valley. It all started with her having to surrender a stray kitty a year ago. She has been here ever since. Eileen is a compassionate and dedicated volunteer with a wonderful work ethic. She’s a faithful animal care specialist who comes in four or sometimes five days a week, works with the felines, lends a hand in the office, and helps us get the job done.Here she is with one of her favorites, Mr. T, who got a home.
